The idea for the society was developed in July 2014 at a workshop attended by ~40 representatives from universities and research institutes across Australia and New Zealand. The first formal n General Assembly (AGM) of the society was held during the Synthetic Biology and Protein Engineering Meeting (a satellite meeting of the Lorne Protein Meeting) on 6th February 2015.

Sinece then, the society grew, and our 2017 conference attracted more than 200 participants and featured many reknown international speakers.

SBA is guided by an Executive Board elected by the Annual General Meeting.
