SBA relies on volunteers from our membership and our anchor sponsors NEB and Decode Science. Our nodes are managed in coordination with the SBA EMCR representative, EarlyCareer Researchers, Higher Degree Research students, undergraduate students, industry and our valued anchor sponsors. If you are interested in catching up on the latest synbio developments in your area, why not join the next event organised at your local node?
The SBA Victoria node is coordinated by Betty Zhang (CEO of Melbourne Bioinnovation Student Initiative and Early Programs Lead at the MedTech Actuator). Synbio-curious friends in research, industry and community are welcome to get in touch to be part of workshops, meet-ups and mentoring opportunities! We are excited to launch the Victorian node of SBA in 2023 and welcome anyone interested in building our local community to get in touch via email.
The Sydney node is coordinated by Roy Walker, Research Fellow at Macquarie University, MQ, together with the team of Henrico Adrian, Patrick da Roza, and Julanie Rogers. The SBA-Sydney run three large networking, knowledge-sharing or workshop events per year at different locations in Sydney with the aim to grow and connect the Sydney SynBio community across Universities and industries. We are currently looking for a new node leader/coordinator. If you’re interested please get in contact with us!!
The Perth node is coordinated by Rebecca Wolters (School of Molecular Sciences, University of Western Australia) in collaboration with James Lloyd, Leni Campbell-Clause, and Clara Woodcraft. Our events include classic research seminars where synthetic biologists from around Western Australia and beyond present their work, but also workshops that foster the learning of new methodology in the field. To get in contact with our node and our community, join our Slack by requesting access through our email or follow us on twitter to stay up to date with SynBio events that are happening in and around Perth.
The Adelaide node is coordinated by Fiona Whelan, Ramsay Fellow of Applied Science (University of Adelaide) and Alix Harlington. South Australian synthetic biologists and the synbio-curious are welcome to get in touch, and come along to our monthly SBA seminars on the last Thursday of the month. Join our mailing list, or check in with twitter for seminar details (with cake!), annual conference viewing parties and noteworthy SBA happenings.
The Wellington node is organised by Rosannah Cameron (Ferrier Research Institute, Victoria University of Wellington). We aim to highlight some of the great work going on in the SynBio space in Wellington by hosting research seminars from academics and industry experts. We will also organise social events as a way to build our SynBio community. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about our events.
The Brisbane node is currently lead by Zacherie LeBlanc (QUT) supported by Tyson Watkins and Karen Rodriguez Martinez. Reach out and subscribe to their mailing list to stay updated on the upcoming seminars and social events. Science and industry seminars are hosted regularly at The Precinct (Fortitude Valley) and we have monthly social meet ups.
We are keen to have nodes all across Australia and New Zealand. Contact us at sba@synbioaustralasia.org to find out more about starting a node in your area!
